DARLINGTON PUBLIC SCHOOL
World Building of the Year 2024
Located on the outskirts of Sydney, Darlington Public School underwent a redevelopment that involved demolishing the existing structure and rebuilding it in two stages. This phased approach allowed the school to continue operating in the existing facilities during Stage 1 and to move into the new Stage 1 building while Stage 2 was under construction.
The new multi-storey school consists of 19 new homebases, new administration and staff facilities, new library and special programs rooms, new hall and canteen facilities and 3 new preschool classrooms.
With 25 percent of its students coming from Indigenous backgrounds, the design prioritised a culturally sensitive and diverse learning experience. It celebrates the school’s rich Indigenous culture and artistic heritage by preserving and showcasing an extensive collection of Aboriginal artworks throughout the campus.
Sustainability is a key aspect of the project, incorporating passive design elements such as sawtooth roofs for optimal sunlight exposure, high-level glazing for indirect daylight, and curved screens for filtered light.
Darlington Public School was awarded the World Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival 2024, standing as an example of how inclusive, community-centric building can positively impact how we live, learn, and create.
